Luke Shaw wants season voided if conditions don't improve

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw says the Premier League campaign should be expunged if the coronavirus prevents play from continuing.

Professional football in England is suspended indefinitely while the country tries to prevent further spread of the infection. Divisions in the non-league pyramid have already been canceled with relegation and promotion scrapped, but the Premier League, English Football League, and the National League are yet to determine how to end their 2019-20 seasons.

Shaw believes he's found a solution.

"Scrap it and start again. Start it again," Shaw said during the Combat Corona fundraiser for UNICEF, according to Reuters. "It's got to be. If we can't carry it on, it's got to be void."

Runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool only required six points to clinch their first title in 30 years before football was halted. Chelsea, Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Sheffield United were locked in a fight for Champions League places, while the battle against relegation was heating up.

One of the potential solutions is to finish the season with matches behind closed doors. However, that still puts the players, match officials, and club staff at risk and, for Shaw, robs the game of a crucial element.

"Fans are so important. You realize it even more (now)," the 24-year-old added. "I think the sport is for fans, really ... I think if you don't have fans, and you don't play in front of fans, it just doesn't feel right."

There are over 48,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in the United Kingdom, with nearly 5,000 deaths stemming from the disease. The nation's prime minister, Boris Johnson, was admitted to hospital on Sunday with virus symptoms.
