Andy Carroll returned to Newcastle United on Thursday after leaving his boyhood club for Liverpool back in January 2011.

The towering striker was available on a free transfer after his West Ham United contract expired.

"It feels very good. My friends and family are here, and it's the club that I support - it is home," Carroll, 30, told the club's website after signing an initial one-year contract with the Magpies.

"I enjoyed the time I spent here, and hopefully I can carry on where I left off. When I left eight-and-a-half years ago, I was scoring goals and I was enjoying my football. It's been a pretty tough time since then, and I just want to get back to that.

"I know it's home. I've played here, I've spoken to the fans - I am a fan - and my family is here. For me to get back to where I was, I think this is the only place for me."

Despite being plagued by injuries since he departed Tyneside as a 22-year-old, Carroll has still amassed 53 Premier League goals for Newcastle, Liverpool, and West Ham. He won the last of his nine England caps under Roy Hodgson in October 2012.

Carroll didn't score over 12 league appearances for the Hammers last season. His last Premier League goal was against Stoke City in April 2018.
