Manchester United are nearing the capture of Harry Maguire after negotiating a deal worth £80 million after clauses, sources told The Independent's Miguel Delaney.

It's understood United's signing of the Leicester City defender is "imminent" after Maguire apparently expressed a desire to leave for either Manchester club earlier this week.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers admitted a "huge club" was pursuing Maguire after Tuesday's friendly against Scunthorpe United but said the club's valuation hadn't been met. The Foxes were demanding £80 million for the English international - £10 million more than United's reported bid earlier this month - and the Red Devils finally reached "acceptable terms" by including £10 million in conditional clauses, reports Delaney.

Manchester United staff members are believed to be keen on the 26-year-old Maguire and view him as an ideal partner for Victor Lindelof in a freshened-up back-four. Right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is already earning rave preseason reviews since his transfer from Crystal Palace, and Luke Shaw appears to be tightening his grip on the left-back spot following seasons largely hampered by injuries.

Making efforts to realize first-team handler Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's vision of a hard-pressing, attacking team, United are also working to structure an approach for Sporting CP's Bruno Fernandes. Delaney reported last week United are preparing a £50-million offer for the Portuguese attacking midfielder and that a transaction is not dependent on unsettled Paul Pogba leaving Old Trafford.
