Ole Gunnar Solskjaer intends to offer the captain's armband to Paul Pogba in an attempt to keep the Frenchman at Manchester United, sources told ESPN FC's Rob Dawson.

With Antonio Valencia set to leave United in June, Solskjaer must find a suitable successor ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Pogba wore the armband on several occasions before Jose Mourinho stripped the 26-year-old of his vice-captaincy in September.

Ashley Young would be the oldest outfield player in Solskjaer's squad, but the 33-year-old is expected to have a lesser role next season.

Solskjaer is reportedly hoping Pogba will accept the captaincy and resist the temptation of a move to Real Madrid.

Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has spoken openly about his admiration for the midfielder, who recorded 13 goals and nine assists in the Premier League this year.

United finished outside the Champions League places for the third time in four years this season.
