Report: Phelan in line to become Manchester United's 1st technical director

Mike Phelan, a former Manchester United player and a current assistant to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is reportedly expected to become the club's first-ever technical director.

United see Phelan, who returned to the team following the firing of manager Jose Mourinho in December, as the right "cultural fit," according to The Telegraph's James Ducker.

Ducker added that the new technical director will work in tandem with manager Solskjaer to create harmony throughout all levels of the club.

The 56-year-old Phelan has little experience as an executive, serving for only a few months as sporting director for A-League side Central Coast Mariners. He vacated the role to take his position on United's bench.

With the Mariners, Phelan was involved in the decision to hand Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt a trial in 2018.
