Former England international Paul Gascoigne has been charged with sexual assault by touching in relation to an August incident on board a train.

Gascoigne was arrested on Aug. 20 at a train station in relation to the incident.

"A man is due to appear in court next month charged in connection with the sexual assault of a woman on board a train from York to Durham," a spokeswoman for the British Transport Police said Monday, according to The Telegraph's Gareth Davies.

"Paul Gascoigne, of Amy Street, Leicester, was charged via postal requisition with one count of sexual assault by touching, contrary to Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

"The charge relates to an incident on board a train on Aug. 20 this year."

The 51-year-old is scheduled to appear in Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on Dec. 11.

Gascoigne insists he did nothing wrong, and, in a since-deleted tweet, said he came to the defense of a girl on the train after hearing someone call her a "fat cow." In another since-deleted tweet, he also accused the police who charged him of asking for selfies and an autograph.

A former midfielder for Newcastle United, Tottenham, and Lazio, Gascoigne has battled alcoholism since retiring in 2005.
