Manchester United have secured the future of one of their most in-form stars.

The Red Devils have tied down England left-back Luke Shaw to a new five-year contract, the club announced on Thursday.

There is an option to extend his new deal for the 2023-24 season.

"Since I came to United, it's been a whirlwind four years that have passed so quickly," Shaw said. "I am very proud to sign my new contract and continue my stay at this great club. I want to thank everybody that has stood by me and shown me huge support - the management, my teammates, and the fans.

"I want to let everyone know that I will give everything I have to repay them and deliver success over the years to come. I'm still very young with a lot more to learn and I can't wait to continue my progress under Jose Mourinho."

It was speculated this week that the Shaw would be handed a lucrative new deal as a reward for his early-season performances, and his new terms will increase his wages from £100,000 per week to in excess of £160,000, reports The Times' Paul Hirst.

That sum would make him one of the highest-paid defenders in world football and represents a remarkable turnaround for the 23-year-old who just months ago looked set to be cast off by Mourinho.

The gaffer himself added: "Luke fully deserves this contract. He understood his development process, he has worked really hard at every level, and he always believes in himself which is a great attribute to have.

"Luke is still young and is improving all the time and he must feel very proud of himself. I am delighted that we are keeping such a talented young English player with a bright future ahead of him."

Shaw's existing deal was to expire at the end of the current season, but he has now committed his future to Manchester United until 2023 after earning a Three Lions recall.
