Defender Jan Vertonghen will be out of action for the next couple of months because of a hamstring injury, with Tottenham announcing Thursday that the Belgian isn't expected to return to full training until December.

The club says the injury has been monitored closely for the past 12 days since he suffered the knock against Huddersfield Town on Sept. 29.

"Further investigation has shown a good initial response to rehabilitation," the club said in its announcement.

"The Belgium international defender will now continue his recovery with a view to returning to full training by December."

The severity of Vertonghen's injury was initially revealed by Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, which caused a rift with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine was upset that the injury was made public before the Premier League team's doctors had an opportunity to examine Vertonghen's hamstring.

The 31-year-old defender scored one goal during eight appearances in all competitions this season.

Earlier in the day, Tottenham announced defender Danny Rose will be forced to withdraw from the England national team and miss this month's UEFA Nations League matches because of a minor injury.
