The Premier League has ordered an independent investigation into allegations Everton made an illegal approach for Marco Silva while he was Watford manager, according to the Press Association.

Although the Toffees eventually appointed Silva in the summer, their attempts in the previous season appeared to disrupt Watford's form. Silva was fired in January following a run of 11 defeats in 17 matches.

The Hornets cited another Premier League club's "unwarranted approach" as a "catalyst" for the decision to sack Silva.

Everton were reportedly prepared to pay £12 million in compensation to pry Silva away midseason, but Watford stood firm. Sam Allardyce was hired to see out the remainder of the Merseysiders' campaign.

The Times reported in July that Everton had agreed to pay a premium for Brazilian playmaker Richarlison in order to settle the dispute. It was believed the initial £35-million fee - which could rise to £40 million with add-ons - included compensation.

"Really I do not have thoughts," Silva told reporters Friday, including The Telegraph's Chris Bascombe. "I do not lose focus. I am calm. My focus is what is important for me and the club. I have been working here from July 3. I don't hear anything."

The inquiry could result in a potential points deduction if Everton are found guilty, The Telegraph adds. Lawyers apparently have the right to ask the club's owner, Farhad Moshiri, for phone records and other relevant material.
