Tottenham will hold their first two home matches of the Premier League season at Wembley because of problems with the critical safety systems at their new stadium.

Spurs announced the delay in a statement Monday, adding that they will host Liverpool and Cardiff City at the Home of Football on Sept. 15 and Oct. 6, respectively. The first home fixture of the season - against Fulham on Saturday - was already scheduled to take place at Wembley.

A prearranged NFL matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders was also switched to the 90,000-capacity stadium.

Chairman Daniel Levy vowed in January that Tottenham would begin the 2018-19 campaign at their new home, but couldn't keep his promise.

"We know this will be disappointing for all season tickets holders, premium members, and our fans worldwide," Levy said. "We appreciate the support our partner the NFL has shown since the extent of this issue became evident today. At the start of the project we asked for your support during what we knew would be a complex and challenging build and now we ask for your continued patience and forbearance."

Tottenham could continue playing at Wembley until the end of the year, according to the Guardian's Paul MacInnes. A venue has yet to be determined for the Oct. 28 encounter with defending champions Manchester City.

Construction at the site began in 2015 as Tottenham wrapped up their final years at the old White Hart Lane.
