Guardiola denies Ederson's request to score a penalty before end of season

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola won't allow goalkeeper Ederson to take a chance from the penalty spot, despite the Brazilian's dreams of scoring a goal in his side's title-winning campaign.

City fans chanted Ederson's name during City's 5-0 win over Swansea on Sunday, in the hopes that the shot-stopper might be afforded the chance of adding his name on the season's scoresheet from the penalty spot. But it was compatriot Gabriel Jesus who stepped up to the spot, before missing the kick.

"I heard (the fans) chanting my name, asking me to take the penalty, but Gabriel went there," Ederson said at the time, as quoted by the Telegraph. "Unfortunately he missed it and Bernardo (Silva), fortunately, scored, but if the manager had asked me to go there, I would have definitely scored.

"I'm not sure if I would be able to do set-pieces, but I'm good at penalties, either using power or technique when I'm shooting. City have their regular penalty takers and we have good options, but if Pep asks me to take it, I'm there. Hopefully it will happen (before the end of the season). I'd like to score."

Those comments inspired a line of questioning regarding Ederson's request during Guardiola's press conference on Friday, but the Catalan tactician wasn't having any of it, as a mark of respect to his opponents.

"That's not going to happen," Guardiola said, of Ederson taking a penalty before the end of the season, as quoted by the Press Association. "He's a goalkeeper, there are other players to hit them.

"There is respect for the opponents, respect for the competitions. In friendlies or penalty shoot-outs maybe he can do it but in a (league) game, no."
