Report: Monaco rejects Southampton's bid for Carrillo

Southampton's attempt to boost its attack has allegedly fallen short, again.

After manager Mauricio Pellegrino revealed Friday that the club "did everything" to sign Theo Walcott before his £20-million move to Everton, Southampton was allegedly hopeful of concluding a "quick" deal to sign AS Monaco forward Guido Carrillo.

However, it appears Southampton will have to return to the bargaining table after the defending Ligue 1 champion rejected a bid worth £17.6 million to sign the Argentine, according to Sky Sports.

An earlier report from Jeremy Wilson of The Telegraph suggested Pellegrino was assured a portion of the proceeds from the £75-million sale of Virgil Van Dijk to Liverpool would be reinvested in players during the January transfer window.

Failing to secure Walcott's services led to Southampton's pursuit of Carrillo as the Premier League outfit seeks another forward to complement Charlie Austin, who is currently out injured.

There is no word as to whether the Saints will return with an improved bid for Carrillo, who has just four goals after appearing primarily as a substitute in his 15 Ligue 1 appearances this season.
