Un nuevo campeon: Boca Juniors captures 31st Primera Division title

The working-class streets of La Boca are alive with the sound of fireworks.

Boca Juniors captured its 31st Primera Division title Sunday - its 25th of the professional era - by virtue of a 1-0 victory over Tigre, becoming the top flight of Argentinian football's first champion since the league expanded from 20 to 30 clubs.

Knowing three points would secure the title for Boca, Luciano Fabian Monzon tallied the fixture's lone goal, heading home a corner kick in front of La Doce, the club's barra brava, before the interval and sending La Bombonera into a mosh pit of 40,000 supporters.

Even more impressive than the goal was the celebration, as Monzon launched himself into the air and did the most arrogant of backflips.

However, although it was Monzon who produced the heroics, the soul of the Boca's accomplishment was Carlos Tevez, who returned to his boyhood club in July to write the final chapter of his illustrious story and bring his career full circle.

Tevez, a product of Fort Apache - a slum in Buenos Aires rife with drugs and crime - played a massive role in Boca capturing the title, scoring five goals in 12 appearances for the club with whom he won the 2003 Copa Libertadores.

After the final whistle, Tevez spoke from the heart, saying: "I came back to feel this emotion once again. I find it hard to talk. These guys needed this championship. From now on a new Boca will be seen. I've been a champion in many places, but this is inexplicable."

Next time Boca and River Plate clash in El Superclasico, the match will feature the Argentinian champion and the South American champion, respectively.
