There was a lot on the line when Germany squared off against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday. Namely, a German victory - all but assured - would put the Irish in a tough spot to qualify for Euro 2016.
But a 70th-minute goal from substitute Shane Long was enough to not only shock the Germans into a 1-0 loss but also move Ireland back into contention in Group D.
Long bested two German defenders and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with his goal in the second half, latching onto a goal kick in stride before smacking the ball into the side netting with an impressive shot.
The Germans tried to find an equalizer but failed in their endeavors, giving Ireland all three points. Coupled with Scotland's 2-2 draw against Poland, Ireland now moves up the Group D table, tied with Poland at 18 points but below them on goal difference.

Ireland beating Germany was a bit of a long shot, so Irish fans will be quite pleased with Long's shot.
