Barcelona sign Ferran Torres from Manchester City for reported €55M fee

Barcelona completed the signing of 21-year-old winger Ferran Torres from Manchester City on Tuesday.

The deal is worth €55 million and includes a potential €10 million in bonuses, according to The Guardian's Fabrizio Romano.

Torres inked a five-year contract with the Blaugrana after scoring 16 goals in 43 appearances for City.

Barcelona set Torres' release clause at a mammoth €1 billion. Ansu Fati and Pedri, the club's other two gems, also have €1-billion clauses.

Torres has spent the last two-and-a-half months recovering from a foot injury he suffered while playing for Spain in October. His last appearance for City came in a 6-1 thrashing of Wycombe Wanderers in the League Cup in September.

Torres joined City from Valencia in August 2020 for a reported €23 million, helping them win the Premier League and League Cup last season.

"Ferran should be proud of what he has achieved here at Manchester City," director of football Txiki Begiristain said in a statement. "Last season was his first time in a new country, but he adapted well. He always gave 100%, worked hard for the team, and scored goals, which helped us win trophies.

"Injury unfortunately prevented him from playing more games this season, but Ferran is a player we have all enjoyed working with, and we wish him all the best at Barcelona and for the rest of his career."

Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed Torres requested to leave in the upcoming transfer window.

Torres now figures to play a significant role in Barcelona's rebuilding project, and the size of the deal indicates the Catalans' faith in him.

However, the club must still find a way to make it work financially. Although Sergio Aguero's early retirement created much-needed salary relief, Barcelona must still offload several players to ensure they satisfy La Liga's Financial Fair Play rules, according to BBC Sport's Guillem Balague.
