Guardiola's mother dies in Spain after contracting coronavirus

Manchester City confirmed Monday that manager Pep Guardiola's mother, Dolors Sala Carrio, died in Manrega, Spain, after contracting the COVID-19 virus. She was 82 years old.

"Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family, and all their friends," the club statement read.

Guardiola donated €1 million in March to purchase medical supplies to help fight the COVID-19 spread in his native Spain.

The contribution from the former Barcelona player and manager helped buy "medical equipment that is currently lacking in health centers in Catalonia," the Medical College of Barcelona's statement read.

Spain has recorded the second-highest number of coronavirus fatalities worldwide behind Italy with 13,055. Monday marked a fourth consecutive decrease in confirmed coronavirus-related deaths in Spain with 637, the lowest number in nearly two weeks.
