Real Madrid would like to hire Jose Mourinho as their next manager despite the Portuguese getting axed by Manchester United on Tuesday.

The Red Devils fired Mourinho two days after a 3-1 defeat to northwest rivals Liverpool, but Los Blancos still view him as the ideal person to oversee an overhaul at the Santiago Bernabeu, according to The Independent's Miguel Delaney.

Santiago Solari is currently in charge of Real Madrid after succeeding Julen Lopetegui in October, but he hasn't remedied the reigning European champions' concerning form. Their last two matches were a 3-0 home defeat to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League and a tight 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Rayo Vallecano.

Mourinho, 55, managed Real Madrid from 2010-13, winning La Liga along with silverware in the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana. However, things turned sour as rumors swirled of a fractious relationship between Mourinho and his players - namely Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, and Marcelo. There was also an infamous touchline spat with Barcelona in 2011 that saw Mourinho deliberately poke Tito Vilanova, who was serving as Pep Guardiola's assistant, in the eye.

However, Real Madrid are apparently willing to overlook Mourinho's past transgressions, as his relationship with the club's boardroom remains strong.

There's currently no estimate regarding a timeline for a potential appointment.
