The combatants are set.
The opening round of this season's Champions League came to an end Wednesday, with Lyon grabbing the last available spot in the knockout stage of Europe's showpiece competition by pipping Shakhtar Donetsk to second place in Group F.
With the participants for the round of 16 now set, attention can turn to Monday's draw, which promises to offer up some tantalizing ties. The eight group winners will be paired with the eight second-place sides; rules of the draw stipulate that clubs from the same league cannot meet in the last 16, and two sides that were in the same group can't be paired together either.
Potential encounters include a rematch of last season's final between Real Madrid and Liverpool, while the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Juventus - who all topped their respective groups - would probably prefer to avoid Atletico Madrid when the fixtures are determined.
The last-16 draw is slated for Dec. 17 at 6:00 a.m. ET.
