PSG, Bayern book knockout stage spots

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are off to the Champions League knockout stage after the pair of continental heavyweights won Tuesday to secure the top two spots in Group B.

It comes as little surprise after the group stage draw in August pitted the two decorated sides with unassuming defending domestic champs Celtic and Anderlecht.

Unai Emery's Les Parisiens are a perfect four-for-four on the heels of Tuesday's one-sided victory at the Parc des Princes against Anderlecht. Midfield metronome Marco Verratti opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a crafty curling effort before Neymar scored on the strike of halftime for a two-goal advantage at the interval.

Full-back Layvin Kurzawa scored his first-ever European goal seven minutes after the break to cement a result that was hardly in question. The France international scored a second 20 minutes later before bagging an unforeseen third six minutes thereafter. That's 17 goals scored for PSG with nary conceded through four European matches.

Bayern's efforts in Glasgow weren't nearly as straightforward. Callum McGregor's 74th-minute equaliser cancelled out Kingsley Coman's first-half opener as Celtic Park verged on delirium. It wasn't to be, as Bayern midfielder Javi Martinez risked life and limb to meet a towering cross minutes later, heading it beyond a lunging Craig Gordon.

The Bavarian behemoth was without several first-team regulars including Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller, though it didn't matter as Martinez's 77th-minute winner saw out a 2-1 victory.

With the result, Bayern sits second on nine points after four matches, booking a spot in the knockout stage for the 15th consecutive year.
