5 most shocking Champions League final moments

Ahead of Saturday's Champions League final between Juventus and Real Madrid, we take a look back at the most stunning moments Europe's showpiece match has ever produced.

John Terry's slip

John Terry's task seemed so simple: slot the ball home from 12 yards out, and give the club that you love desperately its first-ever Champions League title. Over Manchester United, no less.

It was supposed to be a dream scenario for Chelsea's captain, a moment he would never forget. Oh, was it ever a memorable one.

Amid a downpour in Moscow, Terry slipped on the slick turf as he struck his penalty, watching his effort clip the outside of the post. The Red Devils went on to win the shootout and take the 2008 title, and their fans have been reminding him about it ever since.

'Dream Team' humbled by AC Milan

Barcelona's "Dream Team," led by football icon Johan Cruyff, was supposed to waltz past AC Milan in the 1994 final in Athens. Everybody expected the attacking juggernaut, one built on Cruyff's revolutionary ideals, to easily dispatch the Italian side and capture a title that would see the Dutchman's team solidify its status as a dynasty. Especially Barcelona.

That's what made it so shocking.

Milan, powered by Dejan Savicevic and Daniele Massaro, romped to a 4-0 victory that still holds as the most lopsided win in Champions League final history.

'Football, bloody hell'

Two minutes and 17 seconds.

That's how long it took for Manchester United to snatch the 1999 Champions League crown right off the head of Bayern Munich.

Trailing 1-0 as the clock ticked past the 90-minute mark, the Red Devils needed a miracle. They got exactly that. Teddy Sheringham hit the equaliser in the 91st minute, before, improbably, substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the winner just over two minutes later to complete a comeback that made manager Sir Alex Ferguson utter that now legendary phrase after the match.

Zidane's shining moment

The greatest goal ever scored in a Champions League final, and arguably the best tally the tournament has ever seen, period. Zinedine Zidane's famous left-footed volley, a strike that to this day remains the blueprint for perfect technique, was the zenith of the Frenchman's career.

It was a moment of pure footballing perfection that will forever be woven into the fabric of the tournament - and it also happened to win Real Madrid the 2002 title.

The miracle of Istanbul

We all know the story by now, but that doesn't make it any less stunning.

Liverpool, trailing 3-0 at half-time of the 2005 final against a supremely talented AC Milan side, looked truly buried; so much so that fans of the Premier League club were leaving the stadium in Istanbul as the players headed into the dressing room for the interval.

What followed was the most shocking comeback in Champions League final history.

The Reds scored three goals in a manic six-minute spell to get back on level terms shortly after the break, ultimately forcing the contest all the way to penalties, where Jerzy Dudek (and his jelly legs) played the role of hero, leading Liverpool to a title that will never be forgotten.
