Eskimos-Blue Bombers season opener features 2 lightning delays
The 2018 CFL season-opening contest between the Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers finally resumed play for a second time Thursday night - or almost Friday morning - after a second lightning delay.
Both teams were instructed to head to the locker room with 1:24 remaining in the second quarter after referees informed of lightning strikes around Investors Group Field in Winnipeg. This came just minutes after the teams had returned to the field following the initial one hour and 23 minute delay.
The second lightning delay lasted one hour and 32 minutes, for a total setback of nearly three hours.
Because of the lengthy delays the two teams skipped halftime and resumed play in the third quarter just three minutes after the end of the second. The Eskimos spoiled the night for the home fans that decided to stick around, earning a come-from-behind 33-30 victory.
