Just when it seemed like Borussia Dortmund's injury situation couldn't get any worse, the club announced on Sunday that left-back Marcel Schmelzer is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Schmelzer, whose playing time this season has been limited with Jurgen Klopp opting to start Erik Durm more frequently, suffered a broken bone in his left hand during Dortmund's 1-0 home loss to Hamburg on Saturday and subsequently underwent a successful procedure.
The injury marks yet another another blow for Dortmund, who are already without Henrikh Mkhitaryan (tarsal bone injury in his right foot), Dong-Won Ji (torn muscle fiber), Oliver Kirch (torn muscle bundle), Nuri Sahin (torn outside tendon of the knee), and most importantly, Marco Reus (sprained ankle and partially torn ankle ligament).
