Manuel Neuer underwent successful surgery on his left foot Tuesday, but is expected to be unavailable for Bayern Munich until January.

The goalkeeper suffered the ailment in Monday's training session, and further tests discovered a "repeat hairline fracture of the metatarsal in his left foot," as described on the club's website.

"Manuel Neuer has sustained another injury and we're incredibly sorry for him," chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. "The operation went perfectly, which is the most important thing for now. We and our captain are now looking to the future. Manuel will be back to his previous best and available to us again in January.“

Neuer's left foot is becoming troublesome as he reaches the latter stages of his career. The sweeper-keeper was diagnosed with a fracture in his foot in April, rendering him out of commission during Bayern's capture of the 2016-17 Bundesliga title and the start of this season.

Sven Ulreich will immediately put his name in the hat for a starting goalkeeper berth under Carlo Ancelotti, with teenager Christian Fruchtl hoping for minutes during cup outings.

While Neuer is working on his rehabilitation, Bayern Munich will face Paris Saint-Germain twice in Champions League play, and will take on some of its more formidable Bundesliga competitors domestically, such as Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
