Holyfield calls out Tyson for trilogy bout: 'The world is waiting'
After watching last weekend's exhibition bout between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr., Evander Holyfield wants to run it back with his former foe.
"Roy Jones was a good local opponent for Mike," Holyfield said in a press release, according to TSN's Aaron Bronsteter. "But a fight with me (and Tyson) would be a global event, and the only fight that anyone wants to see is a fight between us.
"There is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't make it happen."
Holyfield believes completing the trilogy with Tyson is the only way to end their historic rivalry.
"This is the fight that must happen for both our legacies," he said. "Saturday night you said you were ready to fight me, so sign the contract and get in the ring, Tyson. The world is waiting and it's on you now. I'm ready."
Tyson returned to the ring Saturday for the first time in 15 years, fighting Jones to a draw after eight two-minute rounds at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Holyfield, 58, is a former world champion at cruiserweight and heavyweight, and he's the only boxer to win undisputed titles in two divisions. He beat Tyson twice (in 1996 and 1997), with the first meeting ending in an 11th-round TKO, and the rematch resulting in a disqualification after Tyson bit Holyfield's ear.
