<p>Calvin Russell is going Orange.</p><p>The No. 4 WR in the 2026 class announced his commitment to Syracuse on Saturday, passing up offers to powerhouse programs like Michigan, LSU, Oregon, and several others, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/256515/calvin-russell">ESPN 300</a>.</p><p>Russell, a four-star recruit who hails from Miami, also declined local offers from Florida State, Florida, and Miami.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 6-foot-6, 190-pound deep threat is ESPN's No. 28 overall recruit. He would be the highest-ranked addition in Syracuse football history if he signs later this year.</p><p>Russell caught 39 passes for 704 yards and 13 touchdowns in his junior year at Miami Northwestern High School. He also averaged 21 points and seven rebounds on the hardcourt and is expected to pursue a chance to play basketball at Syracuse.</p>

"I've known (Notre Dame wide receivers coach Mike Brown) since I was five years old. He's shown me that I can come in, step up, and play early. That's their plan with me."</p><p>Larry, who won the Biletnikoff Award in 2003 during his final college season at Pittsburgh, was drafted third overall by the Arizona Cardinals in 2004. He racked up 17,492 receiving yards during an illustrious 17-year NFL career, second most on the all-time list behind Jerry Rice.</p><p>"Having my dad there to help me throughout the recruiting process has been great," Devin said. "He knows what's important. You want to go somewhere you feel like you belong and where you fit in."</p><p>Notre Dame's 2026 recruiting class includes two other sons of former NFLers: wide receiver Kaydon Finley, and the son of Jermichael, and linebacker Thomas Davis Jr.</p>

<p>The Colorado Avalanche signed free-agent defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/607" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/607">Brent Burns</a> to a one-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.</p><p>The deal includes a $1-million cap hit plus games-played bonuses that can earn him another $3 million, according to <a href="https://x.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1940597826054246401">Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman</a>.</p><p>It will be the 22nd NHL campaign for the 40-year-old veteran, who spent the last three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Burns tallied 29 points while averaging 20:57 of ice time in 82 games with the Canes last season before adding a goal and four assists in 15 playoff appearances.</p><p>He's just two years removed from a 61-point campaign in 2022-23 that saw him finish 10th in Norris Trophy voting. Burns won the award as the NHL's top defenseman back in 2016-17 when he tallied a career-high 29 goals to go with 47 assists. He was also a Norris finalist in 2016 and 2019 during his heyday with the San Jose Sharks.</p><p>Burns stands as 6-foot-5 and 228 pounds, though his physicality has diminished in the later stage of his career. He recorded a career-low 11 hits last season.</p><p>But he still excels at finding ways to get pucks through traffic and on net, as his 174 shots last season ranked 17th among NHL defensemen. Even factoring in the tax advantages, Ekblad left significant money on the table to stay in Florida: his $6.1-million average annual value is a major bargain.</p><p>Florida also made a savvy addition Tuesday, bringing in Jeff Petry on a league minimum deal (plus performance bonuses) to replace Nate Schmidt on the third defense pair.</p><p>At this rate, the Panthers could very well make it a three-peat next spring.</p><p><strong>Rangers</strong></p><p>Rangers GM Chris Drury has been criticized for some of his work over the past year, but he made out very well Tuesday, upgrading his team while collecting desirable assets in the process.</p><p>Drury <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3306680" href="https://thescore.com/news/3306680">signed</a> top free-agent defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov to a seven-year contract with a $7-million AAV. Then he <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3306692" href="https://thescore.com/news/3306692">traded</a> defenseman K'Andre Miller to the Hurricanes for a package including first- and second-round picks, plus defense prospect Scott Morrow. Miller inked an eight-year deal with a $7.5-million AAV as part of the sign-and-trade.</p><p>Gavrikov is four years older than Miller, but he's a major upgrade in the short term, and getting him for $500,000 cheaper per season is a huge win. Miller has an intriguing tool kit, but he's battled inconsistencies. Meanwhile, Gavrikov was arguably the NHL's best shutdown defender in 2024-25, and his cheaper-than-expected contract gives the Rangers $1.4 million in breathing room even after re-signing restricted free agent Will Cuylle to a two-year deal with a $3.9-million AAV. The Rangers still have holes in their bottom-six forward group, but they're set up well with ample trade assets.</p><p><strong>John Klingberg</strong></p><p>It was fair to wonder if Klingberg would ever play in the NHL again after he underwent season-ending hip surgery in December 2023. And, despite only playing 30 games this past campaign with the Oilers (regular season and playoffs combined), he earned himself a one-year, $4-million deal with the Sharks.</p><p>Klingberg should log big minutes on an extremely unproven San Jose blue line, and he'll likely quarterback a power play featuring several young, skilled forwards. Ceci's and Dumoulin's best days are behind them. They're both third-pairing defensemen, at best, but these contracts are far too rich for such roles. Corey Perry was a fun add, but Ken Holland's first free agency as the Kings GM will be remembered as a regrettable one.</p><p><strong>Bruins</strong></p><p>The contract the Bruins <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3305911" href="https://thescore.com/news/3305911">handed</a> RFA forward Morgan Geekie on Sunday was a nice deal, but GM Don Sweeney's moves from Tuesday reek of desperation.</p><p>The Bruins traded away a fifth-round pick for Viktor Arvidsson, who, with his $4-million cap hit, is a negative-value asset. They did the Edmonton Oilers a favor. Arvidsson was a healthy scratch at times in the playoffs and has looked like a shell of his former self since a major back injury caused him to miss most of the 2023-24 season.</p><p>The Bruins also signed Tanner Jeannot to a five-year deal with a $3.4-million AAV. Jeannot is big and physical, but he hasn't scored more than seven goals in a season in the last three years since a 24-goal outlier rookie campaign in 2021-22. That's a bit rich for someone who's best suited as a fourth-line player.</p><p>Boston is left with just $2 million in cap space after some other depth signings, but it's hard to say they're an improved team.</p><p><strong>Free-agent frenzy shows</strong></p><p>Being on air for an entire day to break down trades and signings can't be easy in the first place, but it would've been more challenging on a day with far less action than usual. At the time of writing, there were 121 contracts signed worth a total of $672.8 million on Tuesday, according to <a href="https://puckpedia.com/">PuckPedia</a>. For comparison, last year, there were 185 signings worth a total of $1.2 billion on July 1. He's on a cost-friendly contract and fills a need as a third-line center. In most cases, teams trading away a player's rights only get a mid-round pick, at best.</p><p>On the other hand, it never should've gotten to this point for Toronto. It's been evident for years that the Leafs' top-heavy roster configuration didn't work in the postseason, and there were countless opportunities to trade Marner for a major haul before his no-movement clause kicked in on July 1, 2023.</p><p>For the Golden Knights, nabbing one of the top free agents is a clear win. However, it likely wouldn't have been possible from a cap perspective if Alex Pietrangelo's playing career <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3306386" href="https://thescore.com/news/3306386">wasn't likely over</a> due to hip injuries. His absence will leave a major void on Vegas' blue line and in the dressing room.</p><p>Marner, meanwhile, gets a much-needed fresh start with a well-run organization where he'll have a legitimate chance to win a Stanley Cup - or, at the very least, a deeper playoff run. But it also must be disappointing to depart his hometown team, which at one point he <a href="https://x.com/reporterchris/status/1940194535684153424">figured</a> he would stay with his entire career.</p>

<p>Vegas Golden Knights defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1098" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1098">Alex Pietrangelo</a> is stepping from hockey due to ongoing health issues, the team announced Monday.</p><p>While not officially retiring, the 35-year-old acknowledged that it's unlikely he'll be able to resume his career. </p><p>"The past few years have been very challenging on my physical well-being, and I am in a difficult position with my overall playing health," Pietrangelo said in a <a href="https://www.nhl.com/goldenknights/news/vegas-golden-knights-provide-update-on-status-of-defenseman-alex-pietrangelo">statement</a>. "After exploring options with doctors as well as my family, it's been advised to remove the intensity of hockey to see if my body can improve so that I can return to a normal quality of life. </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"This decision has been difficult to come to terms with after the last 17 years of competition and the camaraderie with my teammates and coaches. The likelihood is low that my body will recover to the standard required to play, but I know this is the right decision for me and my family."</p><p>General manager Kelly McCrimmon revealed that Pietrangelo needs bilateral femur reconstruction in both hips. The procedures would not guarantee him any future in hockey, though.</p><p>"Throughout the season, the steps that Alex needed to take to be able to play and practice began to grow and take a significant toll on his body. Our hope in February during the NHL's break for the 4 Nations Face-Off was to give Alex treatment and rest to help provide relief, but instead, what we found were diminished positive results and a process that is no longer sustainable moving forward," McCrimmon said. "... Today's decision is a difficult one for both Alex and the Golden Knights, but it is being made for the right reasons - so that Alex can be the family man we all know him to be."</p><p>The Golden Knights will place Pietrangelo on long-term injured reserve, according to <a href="https://x.com/DannyWebster21/status/1939845926530736312">Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal</a>. He helped lead the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup championship in 2023, four years after captaining the St. Louis Blues to a title.</p><p>Originally selected fourth overall by St. Louis in 2008, Pietrangelo has recorded 148 goals and 637 points over 1,087 regular-season games with the Blues and Golden Knights. He finished top five in Norris Trophy voting in 2012, 2014, and 2020.</p><p>Internationally, Pietrangelo helped Canada win the 2009 world juniors, 2014 Olympic gold medal, and 2016 World Cup.</p>
