Kyrgios fined €20,000 for on-court antics at Italian Open

Nick Kyrgios was fined €20,000 by the ATP on Thursday, according to a release obtained by Christopher Clarey of The New York Times.

The 36th-ranked Kyrgios launched a chair onto the court during his second-round clash with Casper Ruud at the Italian Open, resulting in his third code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct in the match and a default. ATP Tour supervisor Gerry Armstrong informed Kyrgios that he was defaulting the match before the latter packed up his bag and left the court, adds Clarey.

Kyrgios had already been assessed a warning for ball abuse and earned a point penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct earlier in the match.

After Ruud broke Kyrgios' serve to even the third set at 1-1, the Australian received a game penalty - his second code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, this one reportedly for swearing, according to the BBC. The 24-year-old responded to that decision by hurling his racket, kicking a bottle, and throwing the chair.

In addition to his fine, Kyrgios will lose the 45 ATP ranking points he obtained for reaching the second round and the €33,635 in prize money he earned. He'll also be responsible for covering the cost of his hospitality for the tournament.

Kyrgios has since apologized for his actions on social media.

"Emotions got the better of me and I just wanted to say that the atmosphere was crazy out there today, just super unfortunate that it had to end in a default," he wrote. "Sorry Roma, see you again, maybe."

Ruud wasn't ready to forgive Kyrgios for his behavior and called on the ATP to deliver severe consequences.

"I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks he should be suspended for at least half a year," the 76th-ranked Norwegian said postmatch, according to Ben Rothenberg of The New York Times.

He's previously been involved in multiple skirmishes with his peers and officials, on and off the court.

In 2015, he was fined at the Rogers Cup in Montreal for his negative remarks toward Stan Wawrinka. The following year, Kyrgios was suspended for eight weeks for tanking during a match at the Shanghai Masters. Most recently, he called out Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal during an appearance on Rothenberg and Courtney Nguyen's "No Challenges Remaining" podcast Wednesday.
