World No. 2 Rafael Nadal continues to deal with hip soreness, and the lingering injury - which he suffered in the Australian Open quarterfinals - has forced him to withdraw from another 2018 tournament.

Nadal has pulled out of this week's 500-level tournament in Acapulco, where he finished runner-up last year and has twice been crowned champion.

"Tough one, of course," Nadal said. "Yesterday in the last practice I felt something ... I went to the hospital this morning to check it, to do an MRI and I still have some liquid there, so I need to keep doing tests to know what exactly is going on. The spot is really similar to Australia, so I need to be sure about what's going on the next couple of days, and then we're going to work hard to try to recover as soon as possible."

The Aussie Open is the only tournament the 31-year-old has played this season, and he was forced to retire in the fifth set of his quarterfinal match. Before that, he'd pulled out of Brisbane, and last year's ATP Finals and Paris Masters, with a knee injury.

Nadal will lose all 300 points he earned with his finals run in Acapulco last year, firming up Roger Federer's grasp on the No. 1 ranking.
