Eugenie Bouchard reveals battle with eating disorder
Eugenie Bouchard endured a difficult 2015 and on Tuesday she revealed part of the reason why.
After defeating Laura Siegemund to advance to the second round of the French Open, Bouchard spoke about an eating disorder she was dealing with.
"Before matches I was very nervous and definitely had trouble eating," Bouchard said, according to the Bangkok Post. "I just felt like it would come right back up. It's a difficulty I went through. And not just before matches, it happened to me at other meals as well."
The Canadian also noted she had difficulties staying strong because of the issue.
"I was just so stressed I was burning calories even more than I normally would, so it was hard to kind of intake enough to keep my weight up or even gain weight, which was the goal, to become stronger," she said.
"I feel like I learned from it. I know now that even if I feel sick I have to force food down my throat."
Bouchard is trying to regain the form that saw her make the semis in both the French and Australian Open in 2014. Last year, she was bounced from the French and Wimbledon in the first round before an injury cut her 2015 short.
