Report: Gianluigi Buffon to miss England match with ankle injury

Italy's match against England is drawing ever closer, but the news continues to get worse for the Azzurri as the hours to kick-off dwindle.

After losing defender Mattia De Sciglio to a hamstring injury, reports suggest captain Gianluigi Buffon is in danger of missing the contest as well due to an ankle injury picked up in training on Friday.

Manager Cesare Prandelli was quoted yesterday as saying the veteran goalkeeper had to leave the session after twisting his ankle, but added that the ailment was nothing serious and shouldn't keep him out of tonight's highly-anticipated contest against the Three Lions.

However, Italian outlet Sport Mediaset is now reporting that Buffon, who leads the team with 140 caps all-time, will not take part in the contest.

The loss would come as a huge blow to the Azzurri, particularly considering that second 'keeper Salvatore Sirigu is still dealing with a bruised rib he suffered earlier this month.

The Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper should be fit if he is indeed called upon, but at the pace the Italians are suffering injuries at the moment, 21-year-old Mattia Perin could be in for a start once all is said and done.
