The Vancouver Whitecaps have addressed the right-back spot vacated by Steven Beitashour with the loan signing of Fraser Aird from Rangers.

Beitashour was traded to rival Toronto FC in exchange for a draft pick in December, and Canadian international Aird will now vie with Jordan Smith for a spot on the right side of defence, pending receipt of his international transfer certificate and medical.

"We're delighted to bring Fraser into our club," head coach Carl Robinson said. "He is a bright young Canadian talent with great energy in his play and great character. He is still learning the game and hopefully we can help his talent progress. Fraser can play a variety of positions, but we'll be looking for him to compete in the right back area."

The 20-year-old has been with Rangers since he was 16, but was born to Scottish parents in Scarborough, Ontario. He spoke of his delight in moving back to his homeland, albeit on the other side of the country.

"I'm delighted to have joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC on a season-long loan," Aird said. "Hopefully I can come in and help the team and improve as a player under Carl Robinson. I'm looking forward to meeting up with the group and getting started right away."

Aird will link with the squad for its preseason camp in Tucson, Arizona and four preseason friendlies before the big kickoff against the Montreal Impact on March 6.
