Lyon and Besiktas were handed suspended bans from European competition by UEFA following crowd disturbances during last week's Europa League fixture in France.

A statement on the European governing body's website revealed that the two teams will be excluded from future European tournaments if there is a repeat of the violence that took place in the stands.

Both teams were also fined €100,000.

The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) placed a two-year deferral period on the suspensions, stating that either side will be banned from the next UEFA tournament for which it qualifies if there are other incidents similar to those that marred last week's match.

The statement read: "Based on the official reports and the current available evidence at the disposal of the UEFA disciplinary bodies, the CEDB has considered that the supporters of both clubs were responsible for the crowd disturbances at the match."

The charges stem from violence that erupted in the stands ahead of the quarter-final encounter in Lyon on April 13. The match was delayed as hundreds of supporters spilled onto the pitch to seek refuge from the violence.

Another delay occurred after the Turkish side scored the opening goal, as Besiktas supporters began setting off fireworks and showering supporters below them with various projectiles.

Charges against Lyon, according to the CEDB, were the result of "crowd disturbances, setting off of fireworks, stairways blocked, insufficient organization, and field invasion by supporters after their second goal."

Meanwhile, Besiktas' punishment was due to "crowd disturbances, setting off of fireworks, and throwing of objects."
