Rooney returns to training ahead of Europa League clash

Manager Jose Mourinho could call on Wayne Rooney to feature against Saint-Etienne after the Manchester United captain overcame a minor injury in time to participate in Tuesday's training session.

Rooney and nine other teammates trained separately from the rest of the squad at United's Carrington training centre, according to the Manchester Evening News' Rob Dawson, but Mourinho has yet to reveal whether Rooney will be available for selection.

Marcus Rashford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Anthony Martial were among the players who trained alongside the captain.

Rooney's return to training comes as somewhat of a surprise - Mourinho doubted his ability to recover in time for the match after United's FA Cup victory over Blackburn on Sunday.

Although he might not be risked during Wednesday's match, since United enjoys a 3-0 lead after the first leg, Rooney might make his return from a muscle strain during Sunday's EFL Cup final against Southampton at Wembley Stadium.

The 31-year-old has not featured since United's FA Cup triumph over Wigan Athletic on Jan. 29.
