Inter confirms sacking of Roberto Mancini

With the new season's kick-off looming, Inter Milan has deemed it necessary to reach an agreement for the termination of Roberto Mancini's contract.

The manager ends a 21-month sojourn in charge of Inter - his second stint at the club's helm - which saw no silverware collected and a disastrous pre-season ahead of the 2016-17 campaign. He had one year remaining on his deal before it was annulled.

Various media outlets, including the Guardian, have reported that former Ajax Amsterdam boss Frank de Boer has been lined up as Mancini's replacement.

De Boer has a fine record of guiding Ajax to four Eredivisie titles in his six seasons in charge, but if he's appointed in Lombardy he has just two weeks before the side's Serie A kick-off and his first professional stint managing outside of the Netherlands at Chievo Verona.

Despite giving up its position atop Italian football halfway through the last term to eventual champion Juventus, Antonio Candreva is the only significant splurge this summer - an apparent point of contention for Mancini. Considering Juve's lucrative purchase of Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli, De Boer has a growing void to bridge in an increasingly short space of time.

The warm-up matches preceding this season have not provided much hope for the Nerazzurri support either, with the commitments including worrisome defeats of 3-1, 4-1, and 6-1 to Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

Before Aug. 21's journey to Chievo, Inter has friendlies against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday before a meeting with Celtic three days later.
