Manchester United and Liverpool have been fined £44,342 and £43,577, respectively, as punishment for supporters singing and chanting illicit messages, throwing objects onto the field, and fighting in the stands during the two teams' Europa League Round of 16 tie at Old Trafford.

Liverpool was also sanctioned for setting off fireworks and being late to kick-off, while United was issued a charge for blocking stairways in the grounds.

In addition, Liverpool was ordered to pay the cost of repairing damages caused by its fans at Old Trafford.

UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against the two clubs in March.

Both sets of supporters clashed when Liverpool supporters began chanting "Munich!" referring to the deadly plane crash of 1958 after United supporters started to display a banner.

It soon escalated with the pair of fan bases brawling and throwing seats at one another.

Many Liverpool fans were also welcomed by a "murderers" banner en route to Old Trafford before Thursday's second leg, the Hillsborough reference scrawled onto a sheet hanging on a bridge over the M602 in Salford.

Liverpool advanced from the Round of 16 and lost in the Europa League final to Spanish side Sevilla.
