Fiorentina is looking to the future.

The Tuscan club announced plans Friday for a new 40,000-seat stadium that should be completed by 2021.

Italian reports indicate it will cost €420 million to finance the ambitious project, although Fiorentina has made clear its goal is based on enhancing the city's appeal.

A shopping centre, restaurants, a 200-room hotel, and a parking lot will go alongside the stadium, which will include LED lighting and wifi for all ticket holders.

"It is an historic moment. We present an important operational project for Florence and for all of Italy. It will be a sort of Viola renaissance. We are addressing the remaining minor issues. I imagine we would need four years to finish the whole thing," said co-owner Andrea Della Valle, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

He added, "Our project is ahead of Roma's to build the new stadium"

La Viola have ensured ease of access to the stadium, with proposals to build a train station and connections to the tram. It will be just four kilometres west of the main Piazza del Duomo, in the heart of the city.

"We have embarked on a road of no return that will lead Florence to have a new stadium," said the Mayor of Florence Dario Nardella, according to La Repubblica. "It will not be a white elephant, but rather redevelop the whole area. You can get to the stadium by train, by tram, by car, and by bike."

Between 3,000-4,000 new jobs will be created because of the project, according to Della Valle.

Roma recently confirmed its own plans for a new stadium outside of the city centre following a successful meeting with city mayor Virginia Raggi, but classic Italian bureaucracy had delayed the start of the project by at least a year.
