Marseille hires Rudi Garcia as manager

Marseille announced the hiring of Rudi Garcia as its new manager Thursday.

The 54-year-old joins the struggling Ligue 1 side on a three-year deal that will keep him in southern France until June 2019.

Garcia, who was dismissed as Roma manager in January, replaces caretaker manager Franck Passi, and is expected to be on the touchline Sunday when Marseille takes on Paris Saint-Germain.

Confirmation of the hiring came less than an hour after Roma officially severed ties with Rudi Garcia to pave the way for the French manager's move to Marseille.

Roberto Mancini and Andre Villas-Boas were also candidates for the role.

Garcia previously managed French sides Saint-Etienne, Dijon, Le Mans, and Lille before his three-year stint in Italy with Roma. His only top-flight title came in 2011 when he led Lille to the Ligue 1 title.
