Chelsea boss Antonio Conte may have deviated from his Kalidou Koulibaly hunt as it transpires the club is in advanced talks to sign Fiorentina's Marcos Alonso, according to Sky Sports' Michael Cantillon.

The left-footed Spaniard is adept at playing centre-half, full-back, and in the midfield, and although an agreement is yet to be reached, it's believed the former Real Madrid youngster will be subject of a bid around £24 million.

Conte has been trying to add a defender as Kurt Zouma still struggles in the treatment room, leaving the aged pairing of Gary Cahill and John Terry shouldering much of the work.

Links with Napoli's Koulibaly, AS Roma's Kostas Manolas, and AC Milan's Alessio Romagnoli have failed to materialise, though, leaving the Italian gaffer to turn to Alonso.

The 25-year-old will be familiar to fans of English football through his spell with Bolton Wanderers between 2010 and 2013, and his six-month loan stay at Sunderland in 2014.

Since returning to Italy after that temporary spell on Wearside, Alonso has flourished. He made 31 appearances last term as Fiorentina ended the Serie A campaign in fifth place.

The top European leagues now take time off as many players undergo international commitments, but Chelsea returns with a trip to Swansea City on Sept. 11.
