Inter's Icardi done for the season with thigh concern

Milan - Injury-hit Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi will miss the final game of the Serie A campaign after scans revealed the extent of a thigh injury on Tuesday.

Icardi hit Inter's opener in a 2-1 win over Empoli last weekend that secured fourth spot and direct entry to next season's Europa League.

But Icardi hobbled off in the second half with a thigh injury, prompting scans which revealed a "first-degree injury to the semitendinosus muscle in his right thigh", according to a club statement on Twitter.

Icardi is ruled out for Inter's final game away to Sassuolo, and his absence won't amuse city rivals AC Milan as it prays for a Sassuolo defeat.

Sassuolo sit one point ahead of Milan in sixth place, which will be bestowed a Europa League qualifying spot if league champions Juventus beat Milan in the Cup final on May 21.

If Milan upset predictions to win the final, it will secure entry to Europe's second tier competition. Otherwise, the Rossoneri will have to finish in sixth place.

As well as Icardi, Inter will also be missing goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and winger Ivan Perisic through suspension after both players were cautioned for time-wasting against Empoli.
