Buffon saves Fiorentina penalty to push Juventus closer to 5th straight title
Juventus secured its 24th win in 25 matches Sunday thanks to Gianluigi Buffon.
The Bianconeri survived a desperate final 10 minutes to come away from the Stadio Artemio Franchi with a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina. Buffon saved a controversial penalty to preserve three points and keep his team on pace for a fifth consecutive Scudetto.
Buffon - who's enjoying one of his best seasons at the age of 38 - guessed correctly as Nikola Kalinic struck the spot-kick. The Italy shot-stopper then put his body in the way to keep out the rebound, making sure there wouldn't be another comeback.
Kalinic won the penalty under dubious circumstances, as he appeared to embellish contact from Juan Cuadrado.
The Croatian only had the chance to play hero after cancelling out the opening strike by Mario Mandzukic in the 81st minute. Moments later, Juventus substitute Alvaro Morata tapped in the visitors' second goal, which held up as the winner.
Juventus once again showed the same fighting spirit that's allowed it to climb from as low as 15th place to the top of Serie A.
If Napoli fails to win against Roma on Monday, the Italian championship will remain Juventus' property.
