Jordan Spieth misses cut at Barclays; Rory McIlroy regains top spot in world rankings
Jordan Spieth's run atop the world rankings will be short-lived, as a poor showing at The Barclays will bump him from the No. 1 spot.
The 22-year-old shot a season-worst 74 on Thursday and followed up that dreadful round with a 72 Friday, thus missing the cut at the Plainfield Country Club course in Edison, N.J.
This is just the third time in 22 starts this year where Spieth has failed to reach the weekend of a tournament.
He also becomes the first player to miss the cut in his first start since taking over the No. 1 ranking. That spot will now go to Rory McIlroy, who chose to skip The Barclays entirely.
''Hopefully, I can just reclaim it when we're both playing in the same tournament,'' Spieth said.
Spieth was the runner-up in the PGA Championship, finishing three strokes back of Aussie Jason Day, although it was still enough to push him to the very top of the world rankings.
He lasted two weeks in the No. 1 spot, which is one week more than Tom Lehman, who holds the record for the shortest reign ever at one career week, according to CBS Sports' Kyle Porter.
The latest official golf world rankings will be released on Monday.
