Tiger Woods cards lowest round since 2013 with 64 at Wyndham

Tiger Woods recorded his lowest round since his last professional win - more than two years ago - Thursday in the opening round of the Wyndham Championship, shooting a 6-under 64.

His score, clinched with a clutch 12-foot par save on No. 9 (his 18th), is also his lowest first round in nearly three years. He's two shots off the tournament lead held by William McGirt and Erik Compton, who fired 62s.

Tiger was delighted with his performance and the atmosphere at a tournament in which he's making his debut.

"Man, it was electric," Woods said after the round. "Especially early. It probably (helped) with a hole-out on No. 10, there - my very first hole there. I gave it the early call, too - a little walk-up.

"Overall, the people have been fantastic."

Tiger shot a 61 in the second round of his runaway victory at the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational. He doesn't have a top-10 finish over the last two seasons.

He needs to place first or second - at worst - at the Wyndham Championship in order to have a chance to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs and prolong his season.

"If I don't win this event, then I'll have my offseason early," Woods admitted at Wednesday's pro-am.
