Jason Day drops 3 consecutive birdies en route to Canadian Open title
Three successive birdies on the final three holes to close out the RBC Canadian Open sealed the victory for Jason Day at Glen Abbey Golf Course on Sunday.
A ridiculous 386-yard drive on the 17th hole - followed by a fan yelling "light the candle" - was capped off with a birdie as Day took the lead to go 16-under. On 18, after his tee shot found the bunker, the 27-year-old dropped his third-straight birdie to extend his lead to two strokes.
Day shot a 4-under 68 in his final round to finish at -17, becoming the first Australian to win the tournament since Nathan Green in 2009.
Two top-10 finishes in the last two majors hinted that Day was on the cusp of a win. Sunday, he delivered.
"The first thing I said was, 'I've got to get the ball to the hole this time,'" Day said of his impressive putt on 18.
It's the first time Day has won the event, and the fourth PGA win of his career.
David Hearn entered the final round with one goal in mind: to make history by becoming the first Canadian to win on home soil since Pat Fletcher did so 61 years ago.
The Brampton, Ont. native, with patriotic fans cheering in spades, failed to make history, finishing two shots back of Day at -15. For a second straight year, a Canadian finished in the top-10.
Bubba Watson sneaked into contention late in the round after falling behind early. He bogeyed holes 3, 4, and 5 on the front nine, then dropped four-straight birdies on the final four holes for a late push.
Watson finished second, one shot back of Day at 16-under.
Shot of the day
Day's powerful 386-yard drive on 17 earned shot of the day, landing just 74 yards short of the pin.
