Europe leads USA 10-6 after foursome matches on Day 2 of Ryder Cup

Ian Rutherford / USA TODAY Sports

Europe took care of business on Day 2 at the Ryder Cup, capturing five points on Saturday to extend its lead over the U.S. to four points.

Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy are no longer winless, as the duo scored the third point of the foursome matches for Europe to go up 9 1/2 to 5 1/2.

Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan got into some trouble on No. 16 and couldn't make up the ground necessary to get a half-point, losing 3 & 2.

Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer capitalized on the few mistakes made by rookies Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth to halve their match.

Graeme McDowell and Victor Dubuisson's chemistry was unmatched as they won 5 & 4 over Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker. They were the last match out on the course, but finished second.

Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar kept their match close, but couldn't putt when they needed to against Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood, who are undefeated in foursome play.

With the foursome matches completed, Rose gave Europe its final half-point of the day, adding to the four-ball match he won with Henrik Stenson Saturday morning.

Europe leads the tournament 10-6.

The singles matches tomorrow will decide the winner, and the U.S. needs a strong showing to win its first Ryder Cup on European soil since 1993.

"We saw what happened at Medinah, we learned as much as the Americans did there," Europe team captain Paul McGinley said on the Golf Channel broadcast. "We've got to finish off the job. The guys were magnificent today."

As for U.S. team captain Tom Watson, he's confident in the choices he made over the last two days and knows it's not over yet. "Let's see what happens tomorrow," he said.

Europe needs to earn four points to retain the Ryder Cup, while the U.S. needs 8 1/2 of tomorrow's 12 points to win.
