Jason Day withdraws from BMW Championship with back flare up

Brian Spurlock / USA TODAY Sports

World No. 1 Jason Day withdrew in the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday with back concerns.

The defending champion at the event felt his back tighten up when he went to dig a tee into the ground on the ninth hole.

He underwent treatment, and might have an MRI to make certain there are no serious issues, his agent Bud Martin said, via ESPN's Bob Harig.

Day has dealt with, and overcome in-tournament back troubles in the past. He was well off the lead at the time of his withdrawal, but will forego FedEx Cup points as a result of the decision.

He could slide as far as fifth place in the overall standings.
