Fantasy Lookahead: Jim Furyk's poised to perform at Canadian Open

Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Following a runner-up finish at the U.S. Open, Furyk has finished 21st at the Quicken Loans National, 42nd at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and 59th at The Open. He has played in just eight events this year, but he has made six cuts. The U.S. Open was his lone top-10 showing.

Course History

Furyk is a regular at the Canadian Open, as he is one of RBC's marquee players. He scored in the 60s each round of last year's event at Glen Abbey, finishing fourth. He also finished ninth in 2013, scoring in the 60s in two of the four rounds. He didn't participate in the 2009 event at Glen Abbey but finished 14th in 2008.

Statistical Breakdown

Per FantasyInsiders, the following stats have been strengths of previous winners at Glen Abbey Golf Club:

Scrambling Percentage (SCR)
Par 5 Scoring Average (P5S)
Birdie or Better Percentage (BoB)

Furyk hasn't played in enough events to qualify for any of PGATour.com's statistics.

Furyk has lost strokes to the field both off the tee and with his putting, while gaining marginal strokes with his approaches to the green and around the green. He averages 2.82 birdies per round with an average score of 70.496.

The second and fourth rounds have been his best this year, while he has struggled most in the opening round. He has a very slight preference for a later tee time but the difference is largely negligible. He has scored slightly over par on Par 4s, slightly below on Par 3s, and he averages 4.74 strokes on Par 5s.

Daily Fantasy

All of Furyk's prior success at the Canadian Open has inflated his salary for this week, despite poor recent form. The past success at the course make him an adequate cash-game play for owners trying to fade both Dustin Johnson and Jason Day in search of cap relief. A made cut is a near certainty, and a podium finish can be considered fairly likely in a thin field.

Furyk will be somewhat of a contrarian play in tournaments, despite being a fan favorite. Shaky recent form will deter some savvy owners, especially at his high cost.

Season-Long Fantasy

A member of the deep, yet talent depleted B-List, Furyk has to be considered a top choice from this tier. His light schedule this season has preserved the majority of his starts, and owners shouldn't be waiting to use him in any other event.

The field is extremely thin this week, and he has had a history of success at both the course and the tournament. He should be rostered and started for the entirety of the week.
