U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte has been suspended 10 months by the USOC for his involvement in vandalizing a gas station and lying about the details while in Rio, according to TMZ.

All four U.S. swimmers involved in the incident are being punished, but Lochte is getting a longer suspension than his three teammates, Christine Brennan of USA Today reports. He will also be suspended for the 2017 world swimming championships.

The punishment is more severe than Michael Phelps' 6-month suspension for multiple DUIs.

Lochte, who is set to compete on the next season of "Dancing with the Stars," initially told media he and his teammates were robbed at gunpoint by Rio police, but the story fell apart as Brazilian authorities disputed his claims.

As details began to emerge, it became clear Lochte and his teammates were confronted by gas station security who demanded they pay for the damages they caused while at the gas station.

Lochte has apologized but could still be subject to legal sanctions in Brazil. The incident cost him all of his endorsement deals.
