About 15 million fewer Americans tuned in to watch the closing ceremony of Rio 2016 as compared to four years ago in London, according to Variety.

The interest dip represents an almost 50 percent viewership decrease from London 2012, an event that saw roughly 31 million Americans - or the most in 36 years - glued to NBC.

Overall interest was down from four years ago, but not to such a great extent. It's estimated that 20 percent fewer eyeballs were on NBC's nightly prime-time coverage, despite Brazil's far friendlier time zone.

The United States totaled 121 medals in Rio, or the most in its history in a non-boycotted Olympics.
