Canada awarded bronze in 4x100m relay after U.S. disqualification

Canada's men's 4x100m relay team was awarded the bronze medal Friday at Olympic Stadium after the U.S. squad was disqualified for an illegal pass outside the exchange zone.

It was confirmed by officials that Mike Rodgers' pass to Justin Gatlin in the first exchange was made in a restricted area.

The United States has filed an appeal.

Canada, which actually had the bronze taken from them four years ago in London, ran a tremendous race, breaking the national record set by the Donovan Bailey-led 1996 team with a time of 37.64. But the team wasn't in position to upgrade until Andre De Grasse took the baton.

The breakout star sprinted away from China and Great Britain with a blazing-fast split, closing the distance to within 0.02 seconds of the Americans.

With his second bronze in Rio, De Grasse has become the first Canadian since 1932 to win three track and field medals in a single Olympics.
