Alone, and apparently in a class by themselves.

The U.S. women's 4x100m relay team ran a highly successful time trial on an empty track Thursday, making the final with a field-best time of 41.77 in their controversial re-run heat.

The Americans, who won four years ago in London, were eliminated after fumbling the baton in the original qualification, but were granted a second chance when it was determined that a Brazilian runner obstructed Allyson Felix.

Moving into top position, the U.S. advancement comes at the expense of China, which crossed the finish line with a time almost a full second slower than the Americans.

The team returns to the track for Friday's final, and in a middle lane with Jamaica.
