It only took one period for Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin to record the 14th hat trick of his NHL career Thursday against the Minnesota Wild.

Ovechkin's quick three-goal performance was so impressive that several Capitals fans - who hit the road to watch their team play at the Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota - tossed their hats on the ice in his honor.
Seeing a plethora of hats on the ice in support of an away player's performance is rare, and the gesture wasn't lost on Capitals owner Ted Leonsis.
The Capitals - who became the fastest team in NHL history to reach 40 wins Thursday - are clearly doing everything right both on and off the ice.
